Luna FIP Survivor 2017 UCDavis Drug Trial

Debra Roberts - Owner and Editor-in-Chief SAVANNAHGANS® Magazine

After a failed attempt to purchase our first Savannah kitten in 2016 due to a scam artist, I learned a painful lesson about Savannah scams and unethical breeders despite hours of internet research and hours of conversation with the “breeder.” The next kitten we purchased in 2017, F3 Luna, was diagnosed with deadly "Feline Infectious Peritonitis" (FIP) within a few weeks. To say we got off to a rocky start is an understatement.

I refused to give up on Luna—our spectacular girl and everything we wanted in a pet. After countless calls, messages, and emails to many university veterinary programs, Dr. Niels Pedersen of UC Davis called to collect more information. He invited us to Sacramento, CA, for a new (and still pending institutional approval) antiviral drug trial for FIP—we had nothing to lose but time and money, so we dropped everything and made the trip from Ohio. To everyone's amazement, Luna responded fast and became the first cat cured of the once 100% fatal FIP with the antiviral GS-441524 provided by Gilead Science. We were overwhelmed by the support from the Savannah community as thousands followed my blogs; some contributed to our travels and vet costs, and to this day, we are following Luna’s Survival Story and blogs, watching her grow into a now six-year-old FIP Warrior®.

Note: Gilead Science refuses to put their patented GS-441524 through the FDA approval process that would allow veterinarians the means to prescribe. This led GS-441524 to be manufactured solely on the Chinese market, curing tens of thousands of cats worldwide when used correctly and purchased by owners via the safest manufacturers—and not all are. This included many cats in the Savannah community. I’ve created a valuable tool for breeders and owners dealing with FIP or any cat owner that wants to stay proactive. You can purchase my FIP Treatment Handbook HERE (link coming soon—check back in two weeks). It’s not as uncommon as once thought and easier to diagnose now, thanks to the ongoing education and awareness within the veterinary community and with the help of FIP Warriors 5.0.

I've been helping owners and breeders navigate FIP diagnoses ever since. I assist them in obtaining the life-saving off-market antiviral to save their cats—all breeds, all ages, all over the world. I educate breeders, veterinarians, shelters, and rescues about FIP and the treatment process. If you’re dealing with FIP, find help HERE.
